How to convert JPG to WebP
- Add your JPG images by choosing them or dropping them onto the page.
- Conversion to WebP starts straight away. Open Settings if you want to change quality, size.
- Download each file, or use Download all to get a ZIP.
Why convert JPG to WebP
If you run a website, switching photos from JPG to WebP is a common way to reduce page weight and improve load times. WebP is displayed by current versions of all major browsers.
It is less ideal for files you send to other people, because some programs and forms still do not accept WebP.
What happens to your image
- The JPG is decoded and encoded again as lossy WebP at your chosen quality.
- Re-compressing a lossy file loses a little more detail. Start around 80 and compare.
- Metadata is not copied.
- Browsers that cannot encode WebP natively use a built-in WebAssembly encoder, so the result is the same file type everywhere.
About JPG and WebP
JPG
JPEG (also written JPG) is the format almost every device, website, printer and app accepts. It uses lossy compression designed for photographs and stores 8-bit colour.
- No transparency
- Every re-save discards some detail
- Sharp text and flat graphics can show ringing artifacts
WebP
WebP is a format from Google that offers lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation in one container.
- Often smaller than JPEG or PNG at similar visual quality
- Supports transparency in both lossy and lossless modes
- Displayed by current versions of all major browsers
Tips
- Compare sizes in the result list. For already small, heavily compressed JPGs the saving can be small.
- Keep your original JPG. WebP files are best treated as a delivery format.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
It varies by image and quality setting. The result list shows the real before and after size for each file, so you can judge.
Can all browsers show WebP?
Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge can. Older software and some upload forms cannot.
Is the conversion lossless?
No. Both formats are lossy, so a small amount of detail is lost. A higher quality setting reduces that.
Limits to know about
Conversion happens in your browser's memory, so very large images or very large batches can fail on devices with little memory. If that happens you will see a clear message, and you can retry with fewer files or the resize option.
