Why convert WebP to PNG

PNG is accepted by almost every editor and design tool, and it keeps transparency, so it is the usual choice when a WebP logo or cut-out needs to go somewhere that does not support WebP.

What happens to your image

  • Pixels, including the alpha channel, are decoded and written to a lossless PNG.
  • A lossy WebP stays as good as it was; PNG does not undo the compression already applied.
  • Animated WebP converts to a PNG of the first frame.
  • The resulting file is usually noticeably larger than the WebP.

About WebP and PNG

WebP

WebP is a format from Google that offers lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation in one container.

  • Some desktop programs, older email clients and upload forms still reject it
  • Animated WebP needs a tool that understands animation

PNG

PNG is a lossless format: pixels are stored exactly, so it never adds compression artifacts. It supports full alpha transparency.

  • No quality loss
  • Real transparency, including soft edges
  • Crisp for screenshots, logos and diagrams

Tips

  • If you do not need transparency and want a smaller file, WebP to JPG will be far smaller than PNG for photographs.
  • Use the resize option to produce a smaller PNG for web use.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. Alpha transparency, including soft edges, is preserved in the PNG.

Why is my PNG bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses much more aggressively. PNG stores pixels without loss, which costs space, especially for photographs.

Is this safe for private images?

Yes. The file is read and converted by your browser and is never sent to a server.

Limits to know about

Conversion happens in your browser's memory, so very large images or very large batches can fail on devices with little memory. If that happens you will see a clear message, and you can retry with fewer files or the resize option.
