How to convert JPG to PNG
- Add your JPG images by choosing them or dropping them onto the page.
- Conversion to PNG starts straight away. Open Settings if you want to change quality, size.
- Download each file, or use Download all to get a ZIP.
Why convert JPG to PNG
People convert JPG to PNG when a program demands PNG, or when they plan to edit and re-save an image many times and do not want to lose more detail with each JPG save.
What happens to your image
- The JPG is decoded and written as a lossless PNG, so no further detail is lost.
- Existing JPG artifacts are kept. PNG cannot restore quality that the JPG already discarded.
- The image does not gain transparency. A JPG has none to carry over.
- Expect a larger file, often several times the JPG size.
- EXIF orientation is applied so the image is the right way up.
About JPG and PNG
JPG
JPEG (also written JPG) is the format almost every device, website, printer and app accepts. It uses lossy compression designed for photographs and stores 8-bit colour.
- No transparency
- Every re-save discards some detail
- Sharp text and flat graphics can show ringing artifacts
PNG
PNG is a lossless format: pixels are stored exactly, so it never adds compression artifacts. It supports full alpha transparency.
- No quality loss
- Real transparency, including soft edges
- Crisp for screenshots, logos and diagrams
Tips
- To get a transparent background, you will need an editing tool to remove the background after converting.
- If you only want a smaller file, you are better off staying with JPG or going to WebP.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No. It stops further loss from re-saving, but it cannot bring back detail already removed.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
JPG discards information to save space. PNG stores every pixel, which costs more bytes for photographs.
Does the PNG keep my photo metadata?
No. Camera and location data in the JPG are not copied. This also means shared PNGs do not leak where a photo was taken.
Limits to know about
Conversion happens in your browser's memory, so very large images or very large batches can fail on devices with little memory. If that happens you will see a clear message, and you can retry with fewer files or the resize option.
