Why convert WebP to JPG

Websites increasingly serve WebP, so right-clicking and saving an image often leaves you with a file that Word, a printing service or an older photo app will not accept.

JPG works nearly everywhere. Converting is a one-step way to get a file you can attach, print or edit.

What happens to your image

  • The WebP is decoded by your browser and re-encoded as JPG at the quality you choose.
  • JPG cannot be transparent. Transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick, white by default.
  • Animated WebP files are converted to a still image of the first frame.
  • Embedded metadata is not carried over.

About WebP and JPG

WebP

WebP is a format from Google that offers lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation in one container.

  • Some desktop programs, older email clients and upload forms still reject it
  • Animated WebP needs a tool that understands animation

JPG

JPEG (also written JPG) is the format almost every device, website, printer and app accepts. It uses lossy compression designed for photographs and stores 8-bit colour.

  • Opens everywhere, including old software and print services
  • Small files for photos
  • Adjustable quality setting

Tips

  • If the WebP was already heavily compressed, a very high JPG quality will make the file bigger without making it look better. 85 to 90 is usually enough.
  • Need to keep transparency? Use WebP to PNG instead.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparent areas in my WebP?

They are painted with the background colour shown in the options, white unless you change it. If you need transparency, convert to PNG instead.

Can I convert an animated WebP to a JPG?

You will get a still image of the first frame. A JPG cannot hold animation.

Will the JPG look worse than the WebP?

Both are lossy. At a high quality setting the difference is usually not visible, but converting between lossy formats does always lose a little detail.

Limits to know about

Conversion happens in your browser's memory, so very large images or very large batches can fail on devices with little memory. If that happens you will see a clear message, and you can retry with fewer files or the resize option.
