How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Add your HEIC images by choosing them or dropping them onto the page.
  2. Conversion to JPG starts straight away. Open Settings if you want to change quality, size or background colour.
  3. Download each file, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Why convert HEIC to JPG

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. That is fine inside the Apple ecosystem, but a Windows PC, an older Android phone, a print shop or a web form will often refuse the file or show nothing at all.

JPG is the safe common denominator. If you need to email a photo, attach it to an application, or edit it in software that predates HEIC, converting it is the quickest fix.

What happens to your image

  • HEIC is decoded with a WebAssembly build of libheif that loads only when you add a HEIC file.
  • Rotation stored in the file is applied, so photos come out the right way up.
  • Wide-gamut colour is converted to standard sRGB, which is what JPG viewers expect.
  • If a HEIC file holds several images, such as a burst, only the first image is converted.
  • Location, camera and date metadata are not copied into the JPG.

About HEIC and JPG

HEIC

HEIC is the HEIF container with HEVC compression. iPhones and iPads save photos in it by default when the camera is set to High Efficiency.

  • Most browsers cannot display it
  • Many Windows apps, websites and printers cannot open it without extra software

JPG

JPEG (also written JPG) is the format almost every device, website, printer and app accepts. It uses lossy compression designed for photographs and stores 8-bit colour.

  • Opens everywhere, including old software and print services
  • Small files for photos
  • Adjustable quality setting

Tips

  • Quality 90 to 92 is a good balance for photos. Raise it if you plan to edit the result further.
  • Live Photos convert as a still image. The short video part is not included.
  • Converting a batch? Use Download all to get one ZIP instead of many separate downloads.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is lossy, so a small amount of detail is discarded. At quality 90 or above the difference is hard to see in normal viewing. The original HEIC is untouched.

Are my iPhone photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding and encoding happen in your browser. You can check this by opening your browser network panel while converting: no image data is sent.

Why is the JPG larger than my HEIC file?

HEIC compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture usually takes more space as a JPG. Lower the quality slider if file size matters more than the last bit of detail.

Limits to know about

Conversion happens in your browser's memory, so very large images or very large batches can fail on devices with little memory. If that happens you will see a clear message, and you can retry with fewer files or the resize option.
