How to convert HEIC to PNG

Why convert HEIC to PNG

PNG is the right target when you want to edit a photo and avoid adding a second round of lossy compression, or when a tool only accepts PNG input.

Be aware that HEIC is already lossy. Saving it as PNG preserves exactly what the HEIC contains but cannot restore detail that was discarded when the photo was taken.

What happens to your image

  • The HEIC is decoded to full-colour pixels and written as a lossless PNG.
  • Transparency, if the HEIC has an alpha layer, is kept.
  • Colour is converted to sRGB and rotation is applied.
  • Only the first image is converted when a HEIC holds several.
  • Expect large files: a PNG of a photo is often several times the size of the HEIC.

About HEIC and PNG

HEIC

HEIC is the HEIF container with HEVC compression. iPhones and iPads save photos in it by default when the camera is set to High Efficiency.

PNG

PNG is a lossless format: pixels are stored exactly, so it never adds compression artifacts. It supports full alpha transparency.

Tips

  • If the PNG is too large to share, HEIC to JPG gives a much smaller file.
  • Very large photos need memory. If a conversion fails, try fewer files at once or enable the resize option.

Frequently asked questions

Is HEIC to PNG lossless?

The PNG stores every decoded pixel exactly. The HEIC itself was lossy, so the result is as good as the HEIC and no better.

Why are the PNG files so big?

PNG does not discard detail, and photographs contain a lot of fine variation that compresses poorly without loss. Use JPG or WebP if size matters.

Can I convert Live Photos?

You can convert the still image. The video component of a Live Photo is not part of the output.

Limits to know about

Conversion happens in your browser's memory, so very large images or very large batches can fail on devices with little memory. If that happens you will see a clear message, and you can retry with fewer files or the resize option.
