How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Add your PNG images by choosing them or dropping them onto the page.

Why convert PNG to JPG

Photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than they need to be. Converting them to JPG is one of the simplest ways to cut file size for email, uploads and web pages.

It is also the fix when a site or form says it only accepts JPG.

What happens to your image

  • The PNG is re-encoded as JPG at the quality you select. This is lossy.
  • Transparent pixels are filled with a solid colour, white by default. Without this step they would turn black.
  • Screenshots, text and sharp-edged graphics can show faint artifacts around edges. Use a high quality setting or keep them as PNG.
  • Animated PNG files become a still image of the first frame.

About PNG and JPG

PNG

PNG is a lossless format: pixels are stored exactly, so it never adds compression artifacts. It supports full alpha transparency.

JPG

JPEG (also written JPG) is the format almost every device, website, printer and app accepts. It uses lossy compression designed for photographs and stores 8-bit colour.

Tips

  • Choose a background colour that matches where the image will be used. Dark UI screenshot on a dark page? Pick a dark fill.
  • For logos and screenshots with text, PNG or WebP is usually the better format.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my transparent PNG get a white background?

JPG has no transparency, so the transparent areas need some colour. White is the default and you can change it in the options.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

For photographs often a lot smaller, for flat graphics sometimes not smaller at all. The result list shows the exact before and after size.

Can I convert many PNG files at once?

Yes. Add as many as the batch limit allows and download them all as one ZIP.

Limits to know about

Conversion happens in your browser's memory, so very large images or very large batches can fail on devices with little memory. If that happens you will see a clear message, and you can retry with fewer files or the resize option.
